The goal of these grants is to thank our partners and help strengthen our network of support across the state of California. Grantees will work to educate policymakers about the need for the fund and build support for sustained investments to advance Health Equity and Racial Justice with CBOs, clinics and tribal organizations. The Health Equity and Racial Justice (HERJ) Fund initiative will provide up to (12) mini grants to California local/regional grassroot health promoting organizations to help mobilize and engage support for the HERJ Fund initiative.

The purpose of these mini grants is to help our CBO partners in their educational and advocacy work to support the creation of the HERJ Fund. Grants may be used to/for:

  • Organize in-person events such as brief convenings or rallies
  • Organize/Participate in educational meetings with policymakers and/or state leaders
  • Virtual/Communications participation (all network calls, twitter storms, etc.)
  • Work with local press, social media or other communications

Your organization would commit to carry out the activities specified in one of the tiers listed below. Applicants can apply for multiple tiers, but only one grant will be awarded per organization. Expected period of activities is from March – September 2023 (with most activities completed by June), working in coordination with the statewide initiative.

If selected, you will be required to submit a brief final report and spend no more than 15% on indirect costs with granted funds.

These mini grants were made possible by The California Endowment and are being administered by the Public Health Institute.

Tier 1 – Regional Champion

Amount – $5,000

Activities

  • EDUCATION 
    • Participates in educational calls for health equity and racial justice, individual meetings with partners/advocates across the state to educate and advance efforts to establish a direct source of funding to address the social determinants of health
    • Carrying out educational visits with policymakers and other stakeholders on the need for investment in health equity and racial justice 
    • Provides spokespeople for events or policymaker education visits
    • Distribute educational materials on health equity and racial justice 
  • MOBILIZATION 
    • Provides coordination support and mobilizes base  for two in-person events (for example bringing a bus of constituents to Sacramento), with at least one taking place at the State Capitol, second event can also be at the Capitol or a local event
    • For local event, provides on the ground coordination, working with statewide partners 
    • Participates in at least one Community Engagement Committee Meeting per month 
    • Distributes information on events regarding health equity and racial justice
  • COMMUNICATIONS
    • Participating/engaging in coordinated communications efforts with mass media, social media, etc. for health equity and racial justice 
    • Contributes to op eds and other written publications as needed 

Tier 2 – Local Champion

Amount: $3,000

Activities

  • EDUCATION 
    • Participates in educational calls for health equity and racial justice, individual meetings with partners/advocates across the state to educate and advance efforts to establish a direct source of funding to address the social determinants of health
    • Carrying out educational visits with policymakers and other stakeholders on the need for investment in health equity and racial justice. Educate state leaders and legislators on health equity and racial justice 
    • Distributes educational materials on health equity and racial justice
  • MOBILIZATION 
    • Provides support by mobilizing base for at least one in-person events, either at the state Capitol or a local event
    • For local event, provides on the ground coordination for statewide partners 
    • Distributes information on events regarding health equity and racial justice  
  • COMMUNICATIONS
    • Participating/engaging in coordinated communications efforts with mass media, social media, etc. for health equity and racial justice 

Tier 3 – Local Outreach Start

Amount: $1,000

Activities

  • EDUCATION 
    • Participates in educational calls for health equity and racial justice, individual meetings with partners/advocates across the state to educate and advance efforts to establish a direct source of funding to address the social determinants of health
    • Carrying out educational visits with policymakers and other stakeholders on the need for investment in health equity and racial justice. Educate state leaders and legislators on health equity and racial justice 
    • Distributes educational materials on health equity and racial justice
  • MOBILIZATION 
    • Distributes information on events regarding health equity and racial justice
  • COMMUNICATION 
    • Participating/engaging in coordinated communications efforts with mass media, social media, etc. for health equity and racial justice
